Subaru has announced that pricing for the 2022 edition of its Outback mid-size crossover starts at $31,995 – a $200 increase over last year’s model – while a new Wilderness trim comes in at $41,995 with its off-road enhancements.
The new Wilderness model effectively replaces last year’s Outdoor XT in the Outback lineup as the least expensive way to get the car’s 260-hp 2.4L turbo motor. At $41,995, the Wilderness costs $2,700 more than the Outdoor, but is also a far more capable off-roader with its extra ground clearance, long-travel suspension, underbody skid plates, dual-function X-Mode AWD, front-view camera, and a matte black hood applique to reduce sun glare.

The entry-level Outback Convenience trim’s nominal price covers the addition of a heated steering wheel to the car’s list of standard features.
The Outback Touring carries over with no changes, but also sees its price go up by $200.
The Outback’s Limited trim is the next to get new stuff for 2022 with the addition of Subaru’s DriverFocus distraction mitigation system, which last year was only offered in the top Premier trim; the Limited trim’s price goes up by $400 as a result, to $39,595, and the Premier now starts at $41,395, a $200 bump.
All Outback trims except the Wilderness use a 2.5L four-cylinder with 182 hp; the Limited and Premier models can upgrade to the turbo mill as an option.
Subaru’s Outback Wilderness is one of a handful of crossovers to add off-road-friendly features in recent years: The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk was among the first of its kind; there’s now also the Toyota RAV4 Trail, the Ford Bronco Sport, the GMC Acadia AT4, and Ford this week announced its Explorer Timberline, which is set to go on sale this summer with a taller suspension, grippier tires, a limited-slip differential, and skid plates.
