Depending on where you live in Canada, having an all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle can range from being a nice convenience to an outright necessity.
Pretty much every part of our vast country experiences winter weather in some form or another, though, so it’s never a bad idea to give an all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle a serious consideration.
You don’t have to break the bank to get yourself into an all-wheel-drive vehicle, either. There are still plenty of affordable all-wheel-drive cars and crossovers on sale today, although you may have to settle for a smaller vehicle if you want a truly budget-friendly all-wheel-drive product.
Scroll below to read all about the ten cheapest all-wheel drive cars and crossovers on sale in Canada for 2020.
10. Mazda CX-30 – $25,950
No, the Mazda CX-30 isn’t 10 times bigger than the CX-3 – it’s named as such to avoid confusion with the CX-4 that Mazda sells overseas. It starts at $25,950 for the GX AWD trim with a 155-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission, along with equipment such as heated front seats and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
9. Chevrolet Trailblazer – $25,698
The Chevrolet Trailblazer makes its return to North America in 2020 as a 2021 model – albeit as a subcompact crossover instead of a mid-size SUV – starting at $25,698 for the LS AWD model. Buyers will find a 155-horsepower turbocharged 1.3-litre three-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
8. Mitsubishi RVR – $25,498

7. Ford EcoSport – $25,149
The Ford EcoSport S with all-wheel drive isn’t too far off its competitors price-wise, starting at $25,149. Unlike its competitors, however, the crossover lacks standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with customers having to make do with a small 4.2-inch LCD screen as standard instead of a touch display.
6. Kia Seltos – $24,995
The Kia Seltos – which slots in between the Soul and Sportage – is all-new for 2020 (2021, if you go by the model year), starting at $24,995 for the LX trim. The Seltos’ 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine puts out 146 horsepower via a CVT automatic transmission. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
5. Mazda CX-3 – $24,345
The Mazda CX-3 is a decent deal, if you ask us, starting at just $24,345 for the GX Auto model with all-wheel drive. 4. Chevrolet Trax – $23,898
A relatively rare sight on Canadian roads, the Chevrolet Trax starts at $23,898 for the LS AWD trim with a 138-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The Trax also has standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
3. Subaru Crosstrek – $23,795
It’s easy to see why the Subaru Crosstrek is a popular choice among shoppers looking for an inexpensive, practical, all-wheel-drive vehicle. If you want a CVT automatic, you will have to pay $2,000 extra, bringing the price to $25,795 – but you’ll also get Subaru’s excellent EyeSight camera-based safety system.
2. Hyundai Kona – $23,249
The cheapest crossover on this list, the Hyundai Kona undercuts its competitors by starting at $23,249 for the Essential model with a 147-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, and six-speed automatic transmission. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard – as well as heated front seats.
1. Subaru Impreza – $19,995
This may not be a surprise to you, but the most affordable all-wheel drive car on sale today is still the Subaru Impreza, with the base Convenience trim starting at $19,995 (the hatchback starts at $20,995). For that price, buyers will get themselves a five-speed manual transmission and 152-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
